Torrefacto
A particular process for roasting coffee beans with a maximum of 15% sugar, which is added in the middle of the process. With heat, the sugar caramelizes and sticks to the coffee bean, giving it a bright black color; it does not bring positive characteristics to coffee.
Technical assistance
Over 1,500 Extension Service technicians are willing to contribute to transfer of the technology generated by Cenicafé. They also advise coffee growers on topics related to loans, quality assurance and democratic participation, among others.
Symmetry in layouts
With a good layout, the land is better used, the number of plants in each plot is known, the work is better distributed, and the farm is more organized.
Sorting
In classification milling, it is pneumatic separation of beans taking advantage of weights of different types of coffee beans.
Smart Coffee ID Card
Identification document of Colombian federated coffee growers. With it, producers can participate in the FNC elections, receive the payment from the sale of their coffee, and the payments from incentives, grants and credits of programs developed and implemented by the FNC.
Shade (“sombrío”)
In coffee plantations, shade is managed according to weather conditions, soil type and land slope. It reduces environmental temperature of soil and, therefore, evaporation on the surface (relative humidity). Night temperature is higher, and in the day it is lower than in coffee crops in the sun. There is reduced direct sunlight and leaf temperatures, ideal conditions for […]
Selective collection
Coffee harvesting method. Cherries are harvested by hand, one at a time, being selected only those that are ripe: it is the most expensive technique but also the one that yields the best quality results. The resulting coffee is aromatic, clean and uniform.
Seedbed
Large container where coffee seeds are sown until the plant is ready to be moved to firm soil.
Seed
The name given to dry parchment coffee beans that are going to be sown. Seed selection is crucial for quality of new plants, so it is important for coffee growers to use only material from the Cenicafé experimental farms or supervised farms.
